Deadmau5 partners with MasterClass for "teaching electronic music production"
By Alexandre Trochut
MasterClass, a San Francisco-based online education platform that’s luring some of the most talented professionals in their respective fields to teach, just announced a new masterclass to teaching electronic music production featuring the infamous canadian DJ and producer Joel Zimmerman aka deadmau5.
MasterClass' concept is giving today’s masters a way to memorialize what they’ve learned, while also giving them a venue to share stories, insights, and advice with anyone in possession of a computer, some money and several hours to spare. On Deadmau5' featured page, Masterclass declare :
" Before he was deadmau5, all Joel wanted for Christmas were old toasters to take apart. Now, in his MasterClass, watch him take his music apart. Joel teaches you how he approaches melodies, mixing and mastering to make unique sounds you can’t find in a cookie cutter sample pack. You’ll get not only his lessons, you’ll learn how to create your own music without spending money on million dollar gear. " - Masterclass
“This class is designed for you to develop your own style and develop your own sound.”
As showned in the video trailer, Deadmau5' masterclass will provide 20+ private videos walkthroughs and lessons on everything from sound design to artist branding. Deadmau5 explained the reasons why he has accepted taking time to make it :
“ Kids, DJs … anyone can compose music with just a computer. My MasterClass is a no bullshit look into what it takes to make great music, and it’s not just buying millions of dollars worth of gear. I’m going to show my students how to play with sounds and mix melodies they can share with the world. I’ve never done something at this depth before. ” - Deadmau5
MasterClass, which charges $90 for each “MasterClass,” currently features masterclasses including Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey, World-champion tennis Serena Williams, Grammy-award-winning singer Christina Aguilera or also by world-knowned singer Usher.
MasterClass cofounders Aaron Rasmussen and David Rogier who currently employ 22 people, say they hope to film between 10 and 15 more classes in 2016, even if those classes aren’t available until next year owing to post-production. They plan to keep the price point reasonable, too. “David and I are serious about democratizing access to genius,” says Rasmussen.
Asked about the financial arrangement between the startups and its famous participants, Rasmussen and Rogier offer simply that “if a class is successful, they are successful.” They also note that some of the talent gravitating to the platform, including Kevin Spacey and Usher, are also investors in the company.
Deadmau5’s MasterClass is expected to arrive this winter, so if you’re interested you can pre-enroll here.
